Mumbai. A significant quantity of Tur is being imported into India at very low prices from major African producing and exporting countries like Tanzania, Mozambique, and Malawi. Depending on the quality of the grain, the import cost of this Tur is only between 4900 and 5500 rupees per quintal, while the price of the new domestic crop Tur is reported to be between 6700 and 7700 rupees per quintal.
The price of Tur from Myanmar is also low, and prices may soften further when new supplies begin arriving there next month. India is the largest producer and importer of Tur.
According to trade analysts, last year at this time, the price of pigeon pea (tuvar) was hovering around ₹10,000 per quintal.
However, due to continued heavy imports from African countries and Myanmar, along with the arrival of new domestic crops, supply and availability have increased.
A lack of corresponding demand and offtake is putting pressure on prices. A leading trader in Latur says that India may import approximately 800,000 tonnes of tuvar from African countries and approximately 300,000-400,000 tonnes from Myanmar.
According to data compiled by iGrain India, during the first half of the current financial year, i.e., April-September 2025, tuvar imports into India improved to around 397,000 tonnes, an increase of 44,000 tonnes from the 353,000 tonnes imported in the same period in 2024.
During the entire period (April-March) of the financial year 2024-25, total tuvar imports into India increased to 122,000 tonnes. Import of tur will remain completely duty free till March 31, 2026.
