Chinese Tariffs May Impact Pea Sowing in Canada
★ Following China's imposition of a 100% tariff on Canadian peas, many Canadian farmers are adjusting their crop plans, potentially shifting from peas to red lentils.
★ Statistics Canada had earlier estimated pea cultivation at 3.52 million acres, but this may now drop to around 2.88 million acres — a decline of 400,000 to 500,000 acres.
★ Red lentil acreage is expected to increase slightly.
★ In India, the imposition of an 11% import duty on lentils led to a drop in prices.
★ Before imposing tariffs on Canada, China approved imports of peas from Ukraine and Russia. As a result, Russia now supplies 46% of China's pea imports, while Canada's share has fallen to 43%.
★ Kazakhstan also had a good lentil harvest, and the U.S. is expected to plant a record 1.22 million acres of lentils.
★ China's tariff move has disrupted global pulse trade, forcing Canadian farmers to consider lentils over peas.
★ India's tariff is also affecting trade, but balanced production could provide some relief.
★ If lentil acreage in Canada increases, global supply may rise, potentially putting downward pressure on export prices from Australia and Russia.
