Ahmedabad. Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds in various districts of western state-Gujarat have flooded the fields and barns and in many areas the crops have been submerged.
Monsoon activity has increased in Gujarat for the last three days and heavy rains are being reported in many areas.
The storms and thunderstorms there are also proving to be harmful especially for the crops of groundnut, cotton and moong.
It is worth noting that Gujarat has already received more rain than the normal average while its phase is still continuing.
The special thing is that heavy rains are also occurring in the areas where the problem of water logging already exists.
Gujarat is the most prominent producer of groundnut, cotton and castor in the country. This time the area of groundnut has increased there as compared to last year but the area of cotton and castor has decreased.
If the Kharif crops are damaged due to floods, rains and storms, then it can have a direct impact on the domestic market price.
The maximum threat to crops is being reported in Saurashtra and Kutch divisions where peanut and cotton are produced on a large scale.
Floods are already raging in some parts of Gujarat. The damage to the crops can be assessed next week as the Meteorological Department has predicted a series of storms and rains till today i.e. 31st August. Preparations for harvesting of national crops sown early in the state are also going to start from September.
