Seasonal Demand and Prices for Peas Weak in Canada

Regina. Due to seasonal factors, both the demand and prices for peas are currently observed to be soft in the markets of Western Canada. Yellow peas are trading at a price level of $8.40–$8.50 per bushel, while the delivery price for green peas is reported to be hovering around $10 per bushel. Maple peas have remained stable at a price level of $11.00–$12.00 per bushel.
According to trade analysts, the pea export outlook has shown some improvement, with indications of rising demand in China and India.
Meanwhile, the area under pea cultivation in Russia is expected to expand, which could lead to increased production in that country. Consequently, Canada may face stiff competition and a tough challenge from Russia in the global export market—particularly in China and India.
Pea sowing has already commenced in Canada, and weather conditions remain largely favorable. The upcoming new crop is expected to be ready and begin arriving in markets starting in August. At the beginning of the new marketing season, a substantial carryover stock of peas is anticipated to be present.
Forward contracts for the purchase and sale of the upcoming crop are currently being executed; under these agreements, prices are ranging from $7–$8 per bushel for yellow peas, approximately $9 per bushel for green peas, and $10.00–$11.50 per bushel for maple peas.
