Kalaburagi. With the objective of boosting farmers' incomes and generating new employment opportunities in Karnataka's Kalaburagi district, the District Administration and the Department of Agriculture have jointly launched a new brand of pulses named 'Kalaburagi Pulses.' Kalaburagi (formerly Gulbarga) is the leading district in Karnataka for the production of pulses, particularly *Arhar* (Red Gram/Tur).
Under this scheme, farmers in the district are encouraged to undertake the processing, grading, and packaging of pulses themselves, and are provided with facilities to transport their produce directly to the market.
In a concerted effort to create employment opportunities for farmers, the District Administration and the Department of Agriculture have stepped forward to establish a dedicated market for these pulses. Here, various pulses—including *Tur*—are being traded under the brand name 'Kalaburagi Pulses.'
In the initial phase, plans have been formulated to enroll 50,000 farmers from the district into this scheme; these farmers are being provided with comprehensive support, assistance, and incentives at every stage—from the harvesting of pulse crops right through to their sale.
According to the Department of Agriculture, the district currently has 1,000 Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and 35 Farmers' Producer Organizations (FPOs) already in operation, and the intention is to integrate the farmers registered with these entities into the new scheme. The Kalaburagi district produces approximately 60 to 65 lakh quintals of pulses annually.
