Decline in Cotton Production and Procurement by Cotton Corporation of India (CCI)
★ In 2019-20, total cotton production in the country was 365 lakh bales (1 bale = 170 kg). This declined to 325 lakh bales in 2023-24.
★ Production is further estimated to fall to 294 lakh bales in 2024-25.
★ In 2019-20, CCI had procured 124.61 lakh bales of cotton. By 2023-24, this dropped significantly to just 32.84 lakh bales.
★ For 2024-25, the procurement is expected to be only 3 lakh bales.
★ The states involved include Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, and West Bengal.
