Decline in Cumin Production
★ India’s cumin production for the 2024-25 season is expected to be lower than last year due to reduced sowing area, adverse weather conditions, and pest infestations.
★ This year, cumin output is estimated to be between 70 to 75 lakh bags (55 kg per bag), significantly lower than last year’s 1.15 crore bags.
★ Sowing area declined by 20% in Gujarat and around 5% in Rajasthan. High temperatures in October-November affected seed germination, causing delayed sowing.
★ Cloudy weather in Nagaur and nearby regions of Rajasthan may impact crop quality.
★ The early-sown crop (60-65% of the total area) is in good condition, but late-sown crops appear weak.
★ The next 2-3 weeks will be crucial, as the crop is already delayed by a month.
★ Last year, India's cumin production was 8.6 lakh tons, up from 5.77 lakh tons in 2022-23. However, this year, production could decline by up to 30%, affecting both domestic markets and exports, potentially leading to higher cumin prices.
