New Delhi. The final estimate released by the Union Agriculture Ministry shows that the total production of pulse crops has declined by 18.12 lakh tonnes from 260.58 lakh tonnes in the 2022-23 season to 242.46 lakh tonnes in the 2023-24 season.
Under this, the production of Arhar (Tuvar) improved from 33.12 lakh tonnes to 34.17 lakh tonnes, but the production of gram declined from 122.67 lakh tonnes to 110.39 lakh tonnes.
Apart from this, the production of 31.03 lakh tonnes of moong, 23.19 lakh tonnes of urad and 17.91 lakh tonnes of lentils has been estimated in the country.
It is known that Tuvar is mainly cultivated in Kharif season and gram and lentil are cultivated only in Rabi season, whereas moong and urad are produced in both the seasons.
The total production figures of pulses also include the production of other pulses including peas, moth.
During the 2023-24 season, due to the fall in the production of pulses and especially gram, its market price remained high.
Duty free import of tuvar, urad and lentil as well as yellow peas from abroad has been going on for a long time, but the government was a little late in allowing duty free import of Desi gram.
The pace of import of gram may increase from next month while its sowing is also going to start in the domestic division. Along with gram, lentil and peas will also be sown. Sowing of Kharif pulses has ended.
