Due to the attack of pink stem borer, farmers in many districts of Malwa have re-sown wheat.
The pink stem borer, a pest that typically affects paddy fields, has recently caused significant damage to wheat crops in several districts of Malwa, Punjab, including Patiala, Bathinda, Mansa, Sangrur, and Barnala. Due to its impact, many farmers had to re-sow their wheat crops, as proper germination was not possible.
Punjab Agricultural University has reassured farmers that there is no need for panic. They stated that the spread and development of the pink stem borer will likely decrease with the fall in temperature, which should help control the situation. Agriculture department officials are already assessing the extent of the crop damage and inspecting affected fields.
The Chief Agriculture Officer has suggested an alternative to re-sowing: using pesticides to manage the pest problem. The spread of the pink stem borer was exacerbated by the high temperatures during sowing, but with the cooling weather, its activity is expected to lessen, providing relief to the affected farmers.
