Edible Oil Imports in September Estimated 51% Higher Than Last Year

Mumbai. A leading industry analyst has indicated that India’s total edible oil imports in September 2025 were around 1.6 million tonnes — slightly lower than August but about 51% higher compared to September 2024. Palm oil imports declined somewhat compared to August. According to data from the Solvent Extractors’ Association of India (SEA), total vegetable oil imports in August were 1.7 million tonnes, of which 1.61 million tonnes were edible oils. SEA has not yet released the official import figure for September 2025. As per the association, during the first 10 months of the current marketing season (November 2024–August 2025), India’s total edible oil imports stood at 12.7 million tonnes, about 1 million tonnes or nearly 7% lower than the 13.7 million tonnes imported during the same period in the 2023–24 season.
According to GGN Research, India’s gross palm oil imports in September are estimated to have declined 16% from August to 829,000 tonnes, though still 57% higher than the weak imports of September 2024. In contrast, soybean oil imports are expected to have surged to 503,000 tonnes, 37% higher than August 2025 and 31% higher than September 2024 — making it the second-highest monthly soybean oil import volume on record. Notably, India also imported 11,000 tonnes of soybean oil from China in September.
Sunflower oil imports are estimated to have improved by 6% compared to August, reaching 272,000 tonnes — the highest level in the last eight months. Compared to September 2024, sunflower oil imports in September 2025 surged by 78%.
