Excess Production and Stock Pressure Canadian Lentil Prices

Saskatoon. A new report from the government agency Statistics Canada shows that total lentil production in Canada this year jumped 38 percent compared to last year, reaching 3.36 million tonnes, primarily due to a strong increase in yield.

Green lentil production saw the largest increase. However, the massive production and abundant supply are clearly impacting the domestic market.

The price of No. 2 quality large green lentils has fallen to 24-25 cents per pound. Similarly, the price of No. 1 grade small green lentils has slipped to 21 cents per pound, while the price of red lentils remains stable at the previous level of 23 cents per pound. Global demand also remains weak.

Large quantities of lentils are now entering the international market from Australia, increasing the challenge for Canadian exporters.

The government agency ABARES has estimated that lentil production in Australia has increased by nearly 50 percent compared to last year, reaching a new record level.

As a result, intense trade competition between Australia and Canada is expected in South Asian markets.

In India, the lentil sowing area is now behind last year's levels, raising concerns about a potential decline in production.

Red lentil prices in India have been soft for the past two weeks, which may force Canada and Australia to lower their export offer prices. India is the largest importer of lentils.
