Exporters of edible oils will focus on India next year

The edible oils market in India is poised for significant growth in 2025, attracting the attention of major exporters, including those from Indonesia, Malaysia, Brazil, Argentina, and Russia. As the world's largest importer of edible oils, India has seen its demand and consumption rise steadily, driven by a growing population and expanding economy.

The country surpassed China in population in 2023 and remains the fifth-largest global economy, further boosting its need for agricultural commodities, including edible oils.

In the coming years, India is expected to continue importing large quantities of edible oils, with palm oil, soybean oil, and sunflower oil being key products.

Palm oil will likely be sourced from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand, while soybean oil will come from Argentina and Brazil, and sunflower oil from countries like Russia, Romania, Ukraine, and Argentina.

India's import of soybean oil has surged recently, though domestic soybean production remains limited, and sunflower production is also insufficient. While mustard production is satisfactory, the focus on cultivating oil palm has been minimal so far.

Despite efforts by the Indian government to achieve self-sufficiency through increasing domestic production, these efforts are expected to take time.

Modernization across various sectors of the Indian economy will likely continue, but India’s reliance on imports, especially for edible oils, will persist in the near future.
