New Delhi. Although fennel production in the country was lower than last year during the current season, prices remained subdued due to lack of export demand, resulting in a significant decline in export trade. According to data released by the Spices Board, exports of most spices, with the exception of fennel and cumin, improved in the first four months of 2025-26. While cumin exports declined by 19 percent during April-July 2025, fennel exports saw a sharp decline of 72 percent.

Low Arrivals

Daily arrivals of fennel are declining significantly in the markets of major producing states Gujarat and Rajasthan. However, prices are suppressed due to low export demand and weak local demand. Currently, daily arrivals of fennel in the major market, Unjha, are hovering around 2,500 bags. Whereas, the arrival in Nagaur market of Rajasthan has remained at 500-600 bags.

Production Decreased

Like last year, farmers have not yet received a fair price for their produce during the current season. It is noteworthy that during the year 2024, the record production of fennel in the country was 38-40 lakh bags, which decreased to 18-20 lakh bags (each bag weighing 55 kg) in the year 2025. However, due to high outstanding stocks, there was constant selling pressure in the market, due to which the prices could not increase. In the year 2023, the production of fennel in the country was 20-22 lakh bags.

Price

During the current season, the export price of new fennel was Rs. 113-114 per kg in April, which has gradually decreased to Rs. 79-80 currently.

Slowdown and Rise

Informed sources say that fennel prices are currently being quoted at the lowest levels. Current prices are unlikely to decline. Experts believe that due to farmers not receiving fair prices for their produce, they will sow fennel on a smaller area this year. Export demand is also expected to increase in the coming days, which is why fennel prices are expected to rise in the coming days. It is noteworthy that sowing will begin at producing centers during October-November.

Export

After record fennel exports from the country during 2024-25, exports declined sharply during 2025-26. According to data released by the Spices Board, fennel exports during April-July 2025 declined by 72 percent in quantity and 60 percent in revenue. According to the information received, during April-July 2025, the export of fennel was 11758 tonnes and the income received from the export was Rs 154.27 crore. Whereas in April-July 2024, the export of fennel was 41701 tonnes and the income received from the export was Rs 381.08 crore. It is noteworthy that during the year 2024-25, the record export of fennel was 76586 tonnes and the income received was Rs 765.44 crore. In the year 2023-24, the export was 39564 tonnes and the income received from the export was Rs 669.60 crore.
