Fennel - No Price Reduction: Sowing to Decrease
05-Dec-2025 06:57 PM
New Delhi. Currently, export and local trade in fennel is limited, but stockists are reluctant to sell at reduced prices due to the potential for a price increase. Sources say that given the current situation, it is expected that fennel production in the country will remain low for the second consecutive year. According to current information, fennel sowing in the major producing states of Gujarat and Rajasthan will be lower this year compared to last year. It is noteworthy that last year, fennel was sown on 92,000 hectares, while in 2024, the sowing area was 19.7 million hectares. A 10-15 percent decrease in sowing area is being predicted for 2026. Currently, sowing is in full swing at production centers. According to data released by the Gujarat Agriculture Department, during the current week, fennel was sown on 18,262 hectares in Gujarat, compared to 20,040 hectares last year. It is noteworthy that in the previous season, fennel was sown on 4,528,000 hectares in Gujarat, while in Rajasthan, it was sown on 38,000 hectares.
I Grain India's Prediction
I Grain India periodically updates its readers with commodity price reports. It is noteworthy that the October 31st issue stated that fennel prices were not declining, and the export price was ₹78/₹79 at that time. Subsequently, on November 13th, it was also reported that fennel prices were not declining, and a rise of ₹8/₹10 per kg was possible in the coming days. At that time, the export price of fennel was ₹84/₹85. It is currently trading at ₹92/93 per kg. We believe that further price increases are possible due to reports of weak sowing at producing centers and emerging export demand in the coming days, as the new crop will begin in February-March.
Production to Decrease
According to information from producing centers, fennel production in the country is expected to remain low even in 2026 due to a decrease in sowing area. According to information received, the record fennel production in the country in 2024 was 3.8 million to 4 million bags (each bag weighing 55 kg), which decreased to 1.8 million to 2 million bags in 2025.
Exports Decrease
After record fennel exports during 2024-25, fennel exports have declined sharply in the first six months of 2025-26. While a 65 percent decrease has been recorded in quantitative terms, the income has also decreased by 53 percent. According to the data released by the Spices Board, during April-September 2025, the export of fennel was 18351 tonnes and the income received from the export was Rs 232.36 crore. Whereas during April-September 2024, the export of fennel was 53187 tonnes and the income received was Rs 493.57 crore. It is noteworthy that during the year 2024-25 (April-March), the record export of fennel was 76586 tonnes and the income received from the export was Rs 765.44 crore.
