Good stock of peas and lentils available at Indian ports

India's ports currently hold a substantial stock of yellow peas and lentils, sourced primarily from countries like Canada, Russia, and Australia. According to the latest data, a total of 7.75 lakh tons of yellow peas are available at major ports, with the distribution as follows:
- Mundra Port: 3.53 lakh tons
- Kandla Port: 2.61 lakh tons
- Hazira Port: 1.59 lakh tons
Additionally, a consignment of 43,916 tons of yellow peas is expected to arrive at Mundra Port soon, bringing the total stock of yellow peas across all ports to 8.16 lakh tons once this shipment arrives.
For lentils, the total stock at the ports is approximately 1.04 lakh tons, with the breakdown as:
- Mundra Port: 51,300 tons
- Kandla Port: 13,985 tons
- Hazira Port: 39,600 tons
Furthermore, 31,605 tons of lentils are expected to be shipped to Mundra Port, which will increase the total lentil stock to 1.36 lakh tons.
It's important to note that the duty-free import of yellow peas will expire on 31 December 2024, and no decision has been made regarding an extension. However, the duty-free import of lentils will continue until 31 March 2025. The sowing of these pulse crops is still ongoing in India, and the imports from countries like Canada, Russia, and Australia continue to play a key role in meeting domestic demand.
