Heavy Arrival of Wheat in Punjab; Storage Shortage Likely
★ So far, around 9.9 million tonnes of wheat has arrived in Punjab.
★ Several issues are being faced during procurement, such as the need to keep FAQ and URS wheat separate.
★ For procurement of 12.2 million tonnes of wheat, 1,872 procurement centers have been opened in Punjab.
★ Wheat arrivals were low due to rains in late March and April, but increased once the weather cleared.
★ Out of 9.9 million tonnes of arrivals, agencies have procured 3.4 million tonnes so far. Around 0.5 million tonnes were purchased by the government on the previous day alone.
★ About 35% of the total arrivals in mandis are reported to be URS wheat.
★ Due to such massive procurement, storage space is starting to fall short in Punjab.
★ This year, the plan in Punjab is to store 3 million tonnes in private rice mills, 1.5 million tonnes in mandis, and 1.5–2 million tonnes in open areas.
★ Not only Punjab, but similar issues may arise in other states as well.
