Impact of OMSS Wheat Sale Suspension
★ The government has halted e-auctions of wheat under the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS) from Wednesday. The 2025-26 auctions witnessed weak participation, with only around 40% of the offered wheat being sold.
★ FCI had started auctions on November 12. Due to poor lifting, the frequency was changed from weekly to fortnightly, yet buying interest remained low. While demand was strong in states like Punjab and Haryana, sales were weak in several others.
★ The sudden suspension has led to increased market speculation.
★ It is uncertain when auctions will resume, but there are expectations that they may restart from January.
★ The government has set a target to sell 3 million tonnes of wheat under OMSS this year as well.
★ Wheat in Delhi closed at ₹2,770 per quintal on Friday. After the suspension, prices have shown improvement — yesterday it closed at ₹2,790, and today opened at ₹2,810.
★ Over the last four days, prices have risen by about ₹40/quintal.
★ According to i-Grain India, prices may remain stable around current levels.
