Import of 16.52 lakh tonnes of yellow peas expected in six months

New Delhi. After the Central Government allowed duty-free import of yellow peas in the first week of December 2023, its large-scale import started in the country from many other countries including Canada and Russia.
During December-March in the financial year 2023-24, the import of yellow peas increased to a little over 11.69 lakh tonnes, while more than 2.99 lakh tonnes are expected to be imported in April 2024 and about 1.84 lakh tonnes in May 2024. In this way,
during the six-month period from December 2023 to May 2024, a little over 16.52 lakh tonnes of yellow peas were imported in the country.
It is known that the government has now extended the deadline for duty-free import of yellow peas till 31 October 2024.
During December 2023- March 2024, 3.56 lakh tonnes of yellow peas were imported from Russia, 6.05 lakh tonnes from Canada, 1.40 lakh tonnes from Turkey, 27 thousand tonnes from Latvia,
18 thousand tonnes from Ukraine and 9500 tonnes from Lithuania, while small quantities of peas were also imported from countries like Bangladesh,
United Arab Emirates, USA and Egypt. In April 2024, 1.65 lakh tonnes of peas were imported from Canada, 77 thousand tonnes from Russia,
34 thousand tonnes from Spain and 12 thousand tonnes from Ukraine, while the remaining imports were made from other countries. Similarly, in May 2024, 1.62 lakh tonnes of peas were imported from Russia, but it decreased to around 9 thousand tonnes from Canada.
It was also imported in limited quantities from other countries. The stock of peas in the exporting countries has decreased significantly.
According to the data compiled by iGrain India, during December 2023 to May 2024, India imported the highest 7.79 lakh tonnes of yellow peas from Canada, 5.95 lakh tonnes from Russia and 1.40 lakh tonnes from Turkey.
Apart from this, more than 30 thousand tonnes of peas were imported from each country of Spain, Latvia and Ukraine. The remaining imports were done from other countries.
In most of the exporting countries, sowing of peas has reached the final stage or has been completed. The arrival of its new goods will start from July-August.
The import of peas may remain slow in June-July, but the pace of imports can be very fast during August to October.
