Import of peas increased in China – that of moong decreased

Beijing. Data from China’s General Customs Administration shows that during the current season, the country’s import of peas increased till March 2025 compared to the previous season, while the import of moong declined slightly. Peas were mainly imported from Canada and Russia, while moong was primarily sourced from Myanmar.
According to the data, 1,34,384 tonnes of peas were imported in February 2025, which rose to 2,01,448 tonnes in March. With this, the total import of peas till March reached 4,24,597 tonnes—higher than the 3,81,989 tonnes imported during the same period of the previous season. In March 2025, China imported the highest quantity of peas—1,02,813 tonnes—from Canada, followed by 84,165 tonnes from Russia and 4,660 tonnes from Argentina. However, China has now imposed a 100 percent customs duty on pea imports from Canada.
As for moong, its monthly import rose from 19,231 tonnes in February to 45,865 tonnes in March 2025. But on a cumulative basis, moong imports till March this season fell to 98,483 tonnes compared to 1,08,201 tonnes in the same period last year. During March 2025, China imported 33,853 tonnes of moong from Myanmar, 6,960 tonnes from Uzbekistan, and 2,153 tonnes from Australia. A portion of China–Myanmar trade is conducted via road routes.
