Indian Sugar Export Contracts Exceed One Lakh Tonnes

Mumbai. A month after the central government allowed the export of 15 lakh tonnes of sugar, Indian exporters have so far contracted for approximately one lakh tonnes. According to industry analysts, about 40,000 tonnes of this has already been shipped.

It is understood that millers supplied approximately 1.60 lakh tonnes of sugar to exporters during this period. Exporters are trying to secure new contracts.

Of the total 15 lakh tonnes of sugar to be exported during the October-September period, about 7 percent has already been contracted.

The Chairman of the All India Sugar Trade Association says that the volume of sugar export contracts is still small but higher than market expectations.

Considering the prevailing prices in the domestic and global markets, this sugar deal seems encouraging.

The average ex-factory price of sugar in the domestic market is around Rs. 3770 per quintal, so Indian sugar is currently competitive in only a few markets.

These include Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and some countries in the African continent. Global market prices are soft and declining. Sugar supplies from Brazil and Thailand are increasing, and their sugar is available at relatively cheaper prices.

For the 2024-25 season (October-September), the government had set an export quota of 10 lakh tonnes of sugar, but due to weak global prices, only about 8 lakh tonnes could be shipped.

Given that the net sugar production in the current marketing season is estimated to increase to over 300 lakh tonnes, the government has increased the export quota by 50 percent to 15 lakh tonnes. Indian exporters are trying to increase sugar exports.
