India’s DDGS market expanding rapidly: GEMA
★ At the GEMA roundtable, it was highlighted that Rice DDGS commands the highest price due to its superior protein and amino acid profile, although its quality depends on the rice variety used.
★ Maize DDGS contains higher oil content, making it suitable for solvent extraction industries, while Mix DDGS fetches lower prices due to inconsistent quality.
★ Parboiled DDGS has higher starch content as some carbohydrates remain unconverted during processing.
★ Production is impacted by irregular grain supply, maize quality issues, and policy mandates such as 40% procurement from FCI rice stocks, affecting overall quality and realisation.
★ Globally, the US leads DDGS exports, Brazil is rapidly expanding production, and India is gradually increasing its share driven by ethanol expansion.
★ DDGS must undergo quality checks before use in animal feed, including protein, amino acids, colour, texture, pH, and mycotoxin levels.
★ Overall, DDGS is emerging as a key co-product of India’s ethanol sector, but improving quality standardisation, ensuring stable supply, and enhancing global competitiveness remain crucial.
