ICE cotton futures posted losses of 40 to 70 points in the front-month contracts on Friday, with the March contract down 211 points for the week. Crude oil futures rose 21 cents on the day to $63.50 per barrel. The U.S. dollar index fell 0.141 to 97.650.
During the week ending February 3, speculators added 6,717 contracts to their net short position in cotton futures and options, taking the total net short position to 71,746 contracts.
Export Sales data shows total cotton export commitments at 7.8 million running bales (RB) as of January 29, down 12 percent from last year. Commitments are now 68 percent of the USDA forecast, compared with an 86 percent average pace.
Thursday’s online auction on The Seam showed sales of 592 bales at an average price of 54 cents per pound. The Cotlook A Index rose 5 points on February 5 to 73.20 cents. ICE certified cotton stocks increased by 27,344 bales on February 5, bringing total certified stocks to 74,997 bales. The Adjusted World Price was updated on Thursday, down another 42 points to 49.78 cents per pound.
