Karnataka Allows Poultry Feed Makers to Buy Maize Directly

Bangalore. The Karnataka government has permitted poultry feed manufacturers in the state to directly purchase maize from farmers at the Minimum Support Price (MSP). With this, these manufacturers are now free to purchase maize produced in the 2025-26 Kharif season at a rate of ₹2,400 per quintal.
This will also provide relief to farmers who were suffering due to the sharp decline in wholesale market prices.
According to the state government's new rule, poultry manufacturers can now purchase maize directly from farmers without the involvement of middlemen, helping them meet their raw material needs. However, feed manufacturers will have to purchase maize at a price higher than the MSP.
An important condition for feed manufacturers is that the quality of maize must be suitable for poultry feed production, and the moisture content of the maize grain must not exceed 12 percent.
The Karnataka Poultry Feed Farmers and Breeders Association has pledged to begin early maize procurement with a 20 percent advance payment to farmers.
The government will maintain close oversight of this maize procurement policy and will monitor the procurement process.
Farmers have been advised to immediately report any feed manufacturer attempting to purchase maize from them below the MSP. The state's Animal Husbandry Department will take appropriate action.
A similar parallel scheme exists in the state, under which the Karnataka State Cooperative Marketing Federation is procuring maize for distillers. This will benefit producers, poultry feed manufacturers, and ethanol producers.
