Kharif 2025 Sowing Analysis – Maize
★ Sharp surge in maize sowing across several states; record rise in Maharashtra and Karnataka
★ According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture (Government of India) and various state agriculture departments, maize sowing across the country reached 71.21 lakh hectares by 18 July 2025. This is significantly higher than 61.73 lakh hectares during the same period last year, marking an increase of 9.48 lakh hectares or over 15%.

State-wise sowing status:
★ Maharashtra (as of 21 July 2025): Maize sowing covered 13.35 lakh hectares, up from 10.05 lakh hectares last year – a rise of 3.30 lakh hectares.
★ Karnataka (as of 18 July 2025): Sowing reached 15.23 lakh hectares, compared to 13.80 lakh hectares in 2024 – an increase of 1.43 lakh hectares.
★ Telangana (as of 23 July 2025): Maize sowing stood at 5.20 lakh hectares, up from 3.60 lakh hectares – a significant increase of 1.60 lakh hectares.
★ Rajasthan (as of 25 July 2025): 9.49 lakh hectares were sown, compared to 9.48 lakh hectares last year – a marginal rise of 0.01 lakh hectares.
★ Andhra Pradesh (as of 23 July 2025): Maize was sown on 0.76 lakh hectares, compared to 0.65 lakh hectares last year – an increase of 0.11 lakh hectares.
★ Gujarat (as of 21 July 2025): The only state showing a decline, with sowing at 2.19 lakh hectares in 2025 compared to 2.74 lakh hectares in 2024 – a drop of 0.55 lakh hectares.
★ In total, these six major states accounted for 46.22 lakh hectares of maize sowing, up from 40.32 lakh hectares last year – a net increase of 5.90 lakh hectares.
★ This significant rise in maize sowing suggests that many farmers have opted for maize over traditional crops this season. High market prices appear to have drawn widespread interest.
