Maize Market – A Time of Opportunity or a Need for Caution?
For the 2025–26 Kharif marketing season, the Government of India has increased the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for maize by ₹175, setting it at ₹2,400 per quintal. The previous year’s MSP was ₹2,225 per quintal.
Driven by rising ethanol demand, maize prices in India had touched a peak of ₹2,700 per quintal even before the arrival of the Bihar crop. Encouraged by such strong demand, the area under maize cultivation has been steadily increasing over the past two years.
In states like Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Karnataka, farmers are increasingly shifting from traditional Kharif crops like soybean, paddy, and pulses toward maize. The recent MSP hike is likely to further strengthen this trend.

But Now, Caution Is Essential
While the current outlook appears promising, potential risks are emerging:
Continuous rise in production
Growing maize stock across the country

To farmers, traders, and the maize industry at large — seize the opportunity, but stay alert.
The demand for maize is strong, but if supply overshoots market needs, prices may witness a sharp decline.
This could eventually lead to losses for both producers and industry players.
