Mung sowing accelerates sharply, supported by timely monsoon and high MSP
★ In the 2025 Kharif season, the timely arrival of the monsoon and a high Minimum Support Price (MSP) have led to a significant surge in mung (green gram) sowing across key states. According to data from various state agriculture departments and the ★ Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India, mung sowing in major states — Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Rajasthan — has reached 19.05 lakh hectares, compared to just 7.74 lakh hectares during the same period last year. This marks a sharp increase of 11.31 lakh hectares so far.

★ The highest jump has been seen in Rajasthan, the largest producing state, where sowing is up by nearly 11 lakh hectares compared to last year. However, these figures are preliminary and may be revised as final sowing data becomes available.

Why is mung sowing rising?
★ Mung has the highest MSP among all pulses.
★ Government and private buyers are actively procuring the crop.
★ Imports are restricted, so there’s little concern over foreign competition.
★ It’s a short-duration crop, ready for harvest in 60–70 days, allowing timely preparation for the next crop.
★ In Rajasthan, farmers are preferring mung to replenish soil nitrogen and ensure early sowing of mustard in the rabi season. Early sowing also means early harvest, giving farmers an advantage in crop rotation.
★ Meanwhile, government procurement of mung has begun this week in Madhya Pradesh, providing market support and price stability.
★ Among pulses, mung is the only crop with year-round arrivals from different states, making it unique in terms of continuous supply.

Price Outlook:
★ The full picture on market trends and price direction will become clearer in the next 20 days, once the sowing pattern stabilizes. Only then can reliable predictions for future markets be made.
