New Delhi. A vigorous mustard sowing campaign continues in all major mustard-growing states, with acreage already close to the five-year average and likely to surpass it soon.

According to official data, the national mustard acreage has jumped to 7.706 million hectares in the current Rabi season, as of November 28, 2025,

representing 4.14 million hectares more than last year's 7.292 million hectares and 2.11 million hectares less than the normal average of 7.917 million hectares. In Rajasthan, the leading producer, sowing has been at a rapid pace, with the area now reaching its final stage, surpassing last year's.

Farmers in other mustard-growing states, including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Gujarat, West Bengal,

Assam, and Bihar, are also showing tremendous enthusiasm for mustard cultivation, as its wholesale market price has remained high over the past several months, generating attractive returns.

The government has significantly increased the minimum support price (MSP) for mustard, and weather conditions remain favorable for its sowing.

It is expected that the gross area under mustard, the most important oilseed crop of the Rabi season, may increase to around 10 million hectares this year.

On the other hand, the acreage under other Rabi crops is at or below last year's levels. Peanut production has declined from 1.94 lakh hectares to 1.35 lakh tonnes, and linseed cultivation has declined from 1.79 lakh hectares to 1.15 lakh hectares.

Safflower acreage has increased, while sunflower and sesame acreage remain roughly the same as last year. The total Rabi oilseed crop production has reached 80.53 lakh hectares.
