Mustard Acreage Set to Rise Alongside Wheat

New Delhi: In the current Rabi season, Indian farmers are giving top priority to wheat cultivation, while mustard is the second most important crop.
Although the area under gram cultivation is currently higher than last year, it is doubtful whether this trend will continue in the coming weeks.
The increase in the wheat sowing area is mainly due to the high Minimum Support Price (MSP), while the increase in the area under mustard cultivation is due to high market prices.
Since May 2025, the wholesale market price of mustard has been significantly higher than the government's support price in all major producing states, providing farmers with attractive returns and maintaining their enthusiasm for its cultivation. The government has also significantly increased the support price for mustard.
According to official data, by December 5, 2025, the total area under mustard cultivation in the current Rabi season had increased to 79.88 lakh hectares, which is 3.45 lakh hectares more than the 76.43 lakh hectares sown during the same period last year and 71,000 hectares more than the normal average area of 79.17 lakh hectares.
Farmers in all major producing states are enthusiastic about sowing mustard and may therefore try to increase the area under cultivation.
If the weather conditions remain favorable in the coming months, there could be a significant increase in mustard production this year, which is expected to boost farmers' income.
