News Capsule: Canada Market Update
Lentils
★ Last week’s StatsCan report pegged lentil production at 3.36 million tonnes, right in line with trade expectations. Total output is 38% higher than last year, with green lentils showing strong gains while red lentil production is roughly unchanged from 2024.
★ With larger supplies, prices remain under pressure: large greens at 24–25 cents/lb, small greens at 21 cents/lb, and reds steady around 23 cents/lb.
★ Australia is also forecasting a record red lentil crop—about 50% higher year on year—which could add further pressure in key South Asian markets. Red lentil values in India have weakened recently, and this softness may spill over into both Canadian and Australian markets.

Peas
★ Pea prices held steady this week. #2 yellow peas continue to trade in the $7–7.50/bu range picked up on farm, with non-glyphosate demand helping support the upper end. Green peas are trading around $10/bu, with slightly higher bids for low-bleach (<3%) product. Maple peas remain in the $10–11/bu range depending on region and variety.
★ Although recent supply data has been less than encouraging, sales continue at a steady pace.

Kabuli Chickpeas
★ StatsCan’s 2025 chickpea estimate shows production rising 68% to 482,000 tonnes, though quality is a concern—only 52% grading 1CW–2CW, with the remainder falling into 3CW and Sample.
★ According to ABARES, Australia’s chickpea crop (primarily desi type) is expected to reach 2.1 million tonnes, supporting strong export programs into India and South Asia.
