News Capsule: Chana Prices Decline Sharply in December, Demand Remains Weak
★ The downward trend in chana prices continued through December.
★ On December 1, Delhi–Rajasthan chana was quoted at ₹5,825 per quintal, which has slipped by ₹250 over the last nine days to ₹5,575 per quintal.
★ Prices are under pressure due to weak demand in mandis, slow buying interest, higher sowing, better production estimates, and expectations of a large Australian crop — creating psychological pressure on the market.
★ Although bulk deals of Australian chana, like last year, have not taken place yet and imports remain limited, the Indian market is still cautious about the upcoming foreign crop — as it is widely believed that this chana will eventually arrive in India.
★ According to I-Grain India, current price levels can be considered relatively low. If demand improves in the coming days, price recovery or upward movement cannot be ruled out.
★ In the interest of farmers, it is essential for the government to consider increasing import duty before the arrival of the new crop. ★ Otherwise, farmers may lose interest in pulses. A clear example is visible this season — lower prices of peas and lentils (masoor) have directly impacted sowing, with acreage under both crops showing a decline.
