News Capsule: Government Procurement of Chana Likely from Mid-March
★ According to sources, government procurement of chana may begin from March 15.
★ Arrivals of chana are expected to start in some states from the end of January, but procurement will commence only after March 15 to ensure acceptable moisture levels.
★ The government is expecting total procurement to reach around 1 million tons. Currently, chana prices in mandis are trading below the MSP.
★ Chana prices have shown an upward trend over the past fortnight.
★ To replenish buffer stocks, the government had approved procurement of 2.8 million tons of rabi crops during the 2024-25 season.
★ In 2023-24, the government’s inability to procure chana led to a decline in buffer stocks.
★ The government currently holds about 300,000–350,000 tons of chana in stock. If prices rise sharply, imports of chana from Australia could increase.
★ IGrain India believes that despite higher production, reduced imports and the start of government procurement are likely to support higher chana prices in the coming period.
