News Capsule: India Contracts About 100,000 Tonne Sugar Exports So Far
★ Nearly a month after the government allowed sugar exports for the 2025–26 season, India has so far contracted around 100,000 tonnes of sugar for export. This accounts for about 7% of the total export quota of 1.5 million tonnes, according to estimates by the All India Sugar Trade Association.
★ The trade body said sugar mills have sold around 160,000 tonnes of sugar to domestic exporters so far, while exporters have signed overseas contracts for about 100,000 tonnes. However, actual shipments are estimated to be only around 40,000 tonnes till now.
★ At current price levels, Indian sugar remains competitive only in a few markets such as Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and parts of Africa. As a result, the pace of exports may remain slow unless global sugar prices move higher.
★ Meanwhile, amid rising production and the likelihood of surplus supplies, industry bodies have urged the government to consider granting an additional export quota in the coming months.
