News Capsule: MoU for Pulses Imports Expires
★ The long-term MoUs signed by India with Myanmar, Mozambique, and Malawi for pulses imports have expired in March 2026, and there is currently no relevance to extending them.
★ These agreements were earlier aimed at ensuring fixed quantities of Tur (Arhar) and Urad imports. However, pulses imports are now being carried out under the Open General Licence (OGL) system.
★ Under OGL, private traders are allowed to import pulses freely without the need for any MoU.
★ As a result, the role of MoUs in pulses imports has significantly diminished. The OGL system is more flexible and efficient, and whether the MoUs are extended or not is unlikely to have any meaningful impact.
