News Capsule: No consideration of chana import duty hike for now
★ The government has clarified that it is currently not considering any increase in import duty on chana. Rumours of a possible hike to 30% were denied by officials, confirming that the existing 10% duty remains in place until March 31.
★ India imported 1.6 million tonnes of chana in 2024–25, of which around 1.4 million tonnes came from Australia. In 2025–26, imports till September stand at only 47,500 tonnes. Australian arrivals generally begin after November, and two more vessels are expected to reach India by late December.
★ Cheaper Australian chana is beginning to pressure domestic prices.
