News Capsule: Possible Decline in India’s Cumin Exports
★ India’s cumin exports are likely to decline this fiscal year due to a good crop in China and political instability in Bangladesh. China’s domestic cumin is $200–250 per tonne cheaper than Indian cumin, reducing its incentive to import. This year, China has imported less than 10,000 tonnes, which has impacted overall exports.
★ Shipments to Bangladesh have also slowed because exporters are cautious due to political uncertainty. During April–August 2025, India’s cumin exports fell 17% year-on-year to 92,810 tonnes, while export value dropped to $257 million.
★ Exports may fall by 15–20% this year, leading to higher carry-forward stocks and potentially affecting sowing patterns in Gujarat. Demand next year will depend on sowing and price trends. In 2024–25, India’s total cumin exports stood at 2.29 lakh tonnes.
