News Capsule: Sharp Rise in Sugar Production: ISMA
★ According to ISMA, sugar production reached 4.108 million tonnes by 30 November, compared to 2.876 million tonnes last year.
★ As of 30 November, 428 mills are crushing sugarcane, up from 376 mills last year.
★ In Uttar Pradesh, sugar production jumped by 0.117 million tonnes to 1.397 million tonnes. In Maharashtra, production reached 1.695 million tonnes, compared to just 0.46 million tonnes last year. Last season, cane crushing in Maharashtra started late and only 124 mills were operating, whereas 170 mills are operating this year.
★ Karnataka’s sugar production saw a slight decline — from 0.812 million tonnes last year to 0.774 million tonnes this year.
★ ISMA has urged the government to increase the MSP of sugar, which has not been revised in the last six years, stating that the nationwide cost of sugar production is ₹41.72 per kg.
★ ISMA also requested the government to increase the share of ethanol produced from sugarcane juice/syrup, which currently stands at 27.5% (2.89 billion litres). They said that allocating a lower share of sugar for ethanol production is worsening the financial health of sugar mills. Many mills have invested crores in setting up plants that are not being fully utilised.
