News Capsule: Tur procurement and buffer stock status
★ The central government is preparing to begin tur procurement as early as January this year to accelerate purchases amid low market prices and strengthen buffer stocks. The procurement will be carried out by NAFED and NCCF.
★ For most key producing states—Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat—the final approval for quantity and procurement schedule from the agriculture ministry is still pending, while only Uttar Pradesh has formally communicated its details. Last year, the government could procure only 600,000 tonnes against the target of 1.3 million tonnes.
★ If procurement starts on time this year, purchase volumes are expected to increase. At present, the government holds around 500,000 tonnes of tur in buffer stock, while an equal amount is required to maintain the strategic reserve of 1 million tonnes.
★ New crop arrivals have begun, and prices are currently much below the MSP. If moisture levels are within acceptable limits, procurement could pick up further.
★ The government has estimated tur production at 3.6 million tonnes this season, and with timely procurement, lower prices and imports, purchases this year are expected to be significantly higher than last season.
