New Delhi. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, and Food Processing has urged the government to allocate more funds to the Department of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare in the upcoming Union Budget.
This is to ensure that the agriculture sector receives adequate importance and its contribution to the overall GDP increases. The committee emphasized that a lack of funds should not hinder the successful implementation of existing programs and upcoming schemes, and that these programs should be implemented in the most effective manner possible.
The parliamentary panel stated that the meaningful and positive impact of the schemes of the Department of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry must be reflected on the ground.
The panel also stressed the need to initiate the recruitment process in a timely manner to fill vacant positions in agricultural research institutions and Krishi Vigyan Kendras (Agricultural Science Centres).
In its report submitted on December 18, the Parliamentary Standing Committee highlighted the need for special attention to agricultural research and development programs.
It stated that efforts should be made to fill all vacant positions in research centers as soon as possible. The government had informed the panel that vacant positions were being filled through new recruitment and promotions.
The Indian agricultural sector is vast, and the scope of the Department of Agriculture's work and expenditures is constantly expanding. Every year, the government has to spend a huge amount of money on the procurement of pulses, oilseeds, and copra, etc.
New research and development work is continuously being carried out in the agricultural sector, and this needs to continue to ensure the development of improved seeds.
