New Delhi. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) in its report on farmers' sowing intentions has estimated that the pea production area in the US will decrease to 8.95 lakh acres during the current year, which is 8 percent less than the sowing area of last year.
According to the report, compared to last year, this time the area of peas is likely to decrease in Montana, Nebraska and North Dakota states.
The area of peas in the state of Nebraska is likely to decrease to the lowest level in recent years because the farmers there have turned to other crops.
According to the USDA report, the sowing of dry edible beans in the US is also expected to be less in area. In the states covered by USDA, its total area is expected to fall by 4% compared to last year and remain at 14.70 lakh acres,
but if the states outside the area covered in the report are also included, then its total production area is likely to fall from 16.58 lakh acres last year to 15.73 lakh acres this time.
The report says that the production area of dry beans in Minnesota province is expected to increase to a new record level of 3.20 lakh acres, but in North Dakota province this area is likely to fall from 7.30 lakh acres to 6.30 lakh acres.
On the other hand, in America, the production area of gram (mainly Kabuli) is expected to increase by 12% to 5.61 lakh acres and the sowing area of lentil is expected to increase by 18% to reach 11 lakh acres. USDA hopes that it can get good success in increasing the export of lentil in the Indian market.
India can reduce the import duty on it. Anyway, the Indian government has imposed only 11 percent customs duty on the import of lentils.
