Pulse Imports Decline, Yet Prices Remain Weak
★ According to data released by the Ministry of Commerce, India imported 2.242 million tons of pulses during April–October. This included desi chana at 0.093 million tons (1.52 million tons in the same period last year), urad at 0.642 million tons (0.472 last year), lentils at 0.312 million tons (0.50 last year), tur at 0.638 million tons (0.814 last year), and yellow peas at 0.557 million tons (0.485 last year).
★ Except for urad and peas, imports of all other pulses declined, with the sharpest drop seen in tur and lentils.
★ In the previous financial year, total pulse imports stood at 6.932 million tons, including chana at 1.506 million tons, urad at 0.824 million tons, lentils at 1.22 million tons, tur at 1.22 million tons, and peas at 2.164 million tons. Pulse imports were at a record level last year.

Why are prices not rising despite lower imports?
★ The main reason prices have not strengthened is the record level of imports in the previous financial year.
★ Stocks of peas, chana, lentils, tur, and urad are still available at ports; however, as imports decline, these stocks are also gradually reducing.
★ Typically, large quantities of pulses are imported during November, December, and January, as chickpea and lentil harvests arrive in Australia, and lentils and peas are harvested in Canada. From January onward, supplies of urad and tur begin arriving from Myanmar.
★ Pulse imports may increase in the coming days.
★ Kharif season production of urad, tur, and moong has declined, while imports have also fallen.
★ IGrain India believes that prices of tur and urad may see improvement, and prices of peas, chana, and lentils could also rise.
