Mumbai. Rabi crop sowing in Maharashtra is slowly gaining momentum, with a steady improvement in acreage.
Kharif crops suffered significant losses due to unseasonal rains during the southwest monsoon season and after the monsoon season, and farmers can now try to compensate for this with Rabi crops. Vigorous efforts are underway.
According to the latest weekly report of the State Agriculture Department, the total Rabi crop area in Maharashtra has increased from 2.6 million hectares to 1.77 lakh hectares as of November 24th this year. Rabi crop sowing is still underway.
Compared to last year, wheat area in Maharashtra increased from 2.09 lakh hectares to 3.02 lakh hectares during the current Rabi season, and maize area declined from 1.34 lakh hectares to 8.28 lakh hectares.
As a result, the total area under wheat and coarse grains also declined from 134.7 million hectares last year to 134.6 million hectares this time.
However, the area under pulses increased from 10.59 million hectares to 12.35 million hectares during the same period.
The area under gram, in particular, increased from 10.32 million hectares to 11.92 lakh hectares, and the area under other pulses improved from 27,000 hectares to 43,000 hectares. It is noteworthy that Maharashtra is among the leading gram-producing states in the country.
Oilseed crops are cultivated on a limited area in Maharashtra during the Rabi season. The total area under production has reached 18,000 hectares, which is almost the same as last year. Sesame and sunflower sowing has already begun there.
