New Delhi: Data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) shows that the country received only 1.7 mm of rainfall during the past week, which is 55 percent less than the normal average of 3.7 mm.
However, despite this, the total rainfall at the national level during the post-monsoon period, from October 1 to December 10, increased to 132.6 mm, which is 22.4 mm or about 20 percent more than the normal average of 110.2 mm.
According to the Meteorological Department, all four regions of the country received less than average rainfall during the week under review.
The eastern and northeastern regions, the northwestern part, and the central states of the country received no rainfall during this period, which was 100 percent less than their respective normal averages of 2.6 mm, 2.3 mm, and 1.6 mm. Southern India also received 8.5 mm of rainfall, which was 20 percent less than the normal average.
Overall, 27 out of the 36 meteorological subdivisions of the country received no rainfall. Three subdivisions received significantly more than normal rainfall,
and one subdivision received slightly more than normal rainfall. In addition, three subdivisions received less than normal rainfall, and two other subdivisions recorded very little rainfall.
Due to the activity of the northeast monsoon in South India, rainfall is occurring in some areas. However, the weather remains dry in the rest of the country.
As a result, the water levels in dams and reservoirs have started to decline. In North India, the high daytime temperatures are causing the soil moisture in the fields to dry up,
but there is no cause for alarm at present. The active La Niña weather pattern may bring good rainfall in the coming days.
