Significant Increase in Maize Sowing
★ According to data from the Agriculture Ministry and various state agriculture departments, as of September 12, 2025, maize sowing in the country has reached 94.84 lakh hectares, compared to 84.30 lakh hectares in the same period last year. This shows a notable increase of 10.54 lakh hectares in maize sowing.

State-wise situation
★ In Andhra Pradesh, maize sowing stood at 1.52 lakh hectares, 0.33 lakh hectares higher than last year.
★ In Gujarat, sowing was 2.80 lakh hectares, 0.05 lakh hectares lower.
★ In Karnataka, sowing reached 16.28 lakh hectares, 1.68 lakh hectares higher than last year.
★ In Maharashtra, maize sowing stood at 14.53 lakh hectares, showing the highest increase of 3.33 lakh hectares.
★ In Rajasthan, sowing was recorded at 9.85 lakh hectares, 0.15 lakh hectares higher.
★ In Telangana, sowing reached 2.58 lakh hectares, an increase of 0.38 lakh hectares.
★ In Uttar Pradesh, maize sowing stood at 8.20 lakh hectares, 0.45 lakh hectares higher than last year.
★ In Madhya Pradesh, sowing was 51.20 lakh hectares, 2.68 lakh hectares lower compared to last year.
★ Overall, in major states, maize sowing this year has been recorded at 106.96 lakh hectares, compared to 103.37 lakh hectares last year, marking an increase of 3.59 lakh hectares.
★ The main reason for this increase in maize sowing is farmers’ expectation of better prices and a stable market, leading them to shift towards maize.
★ Production is expected to reach record levels this year.
★ In some parts of Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh, rainfall has damaged crops, though conditions remain good in other states.
★ The use of maize in ethanol production may decline slightly this year as several alternative feedstocks have now been approved.
★ Production has been rising for two consecutive years, ensuring good availability of maize.
★ Prices are expected to remain at current levels.
