But not much rise

New Delhi. Due to unfavourable weather at the production centres, the plucking of small cardamom has been affected and the buying by exporters has improved, due to which the prices of small cardamom are being quoted strongly at the auction centres. Sources believe that the market is likely to remain strong till the arrival of new goods increases. But if there is pressure of arrival in mid-August, then the prices may fall. Because the production of this small cardamom will be more than last year.

Production

Informed sources say that recently there is news of 5/10 percent loss to the small cardamom crop at the production centres, which happens every year. Small cardamom is mainly produced in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. It is estimated that during the current season, the production of small cardamom in the country will be around 28/30 thousand tonnes. Whereas last year the production was considered to be 23/24 thousand tonnes.

Down-up

Traders say that the market will remain strong for the time being. Because the arrivals at the auction centers are decreasing and the local demand is also strong with the exporters. It is expected that before the arrival of new goods, the prices may rise by Rs 50/75. Currently, the price of small cardamom in Delhi market is running at Rs 2350/3300 per kg according to the quality. Whereas the average price in auctions at the producing centers is being quoted at Rs 2740/2750.

Export

According to the data released by the Spices Board, during the year 2024-25 (April-March), the export of small cardamom was 6727.80 tonnes and the income received from export was Rs 156682 lakh. Whereas in the year 2023-24 exports were 6168.13 tonnes and the income from exports was Rs 99960 lakh.

Import

Although the production of small cardamom is sufficient in the country, despite this, importers import it from abroad because the quality of goods abroad is low and the prices are lower than Indian cardamom. According to the data released by the Spices Board, during the year 2024-25, the import of small cardamom was 1318 tonnes. Whereas in the year 2023-24, the import was 2552 tonnes. In the year 2020-21, the import was only 311 tonnes.
