Southern states need more rain

Warangal. Although there has been rain in South India in recent days and the Meteorological Department has expressed the possibility of heavy rain in Telangana, Karnataka and coastal Andhra Pradesh in the future,

but agricultural experts say that not only good rain is needed in these states, but it is also necessary for the rain to be distributed equally in all areas. Some districts receive torrential rains while some other districts yearn for rain.

Although Tamil Nadu and Kerala have received heavy monsoon rains and the overall condition of rain in Karnataka is also considered normal or satisfactory, but some districts of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are still in the grip of drought. Rains are expected there in the last days of July and the beginning of August.

As far as the stock of water in dams and reservoirs is concerned, its condition has improved a lot during the recent weeks. Data from the Central Water Commission shows that the water level in the dams and reservoirs of the Southern Peninsula has risen to 38.327 billion cubic metres (BCM), which is about 70 per cent of its total storage capacity of 54,939 BCM.

The dams of Tamil Nadu are full of water, while the reservoirs of Karnataka also have about 74 per cent water stock. More than 60 per cent water stock is available in the dams and reservoirs of Kerala and Andhra Pradesh, but in Telangana this water level is only 38 per cent.

On the other hand, 59 per cent water stock is being reported in the total 28 major reservoirs present in the central region of the country. According to the Central Water Commission, the total storage capacity of water in these reservoirs is 48,588 BCM, while 28,726 BCM water is available in it.

In comparison to the gross storage capacity, 64.5 per cent water stock is being reported in the reservoirs of Madhya Pradesh, 56 per cent in Uttar Pradesh, 50 per cent in Chhattisgarh and 38 per cent in the dams of Uttarakhand.
