Sowing area for rabi crops in Gujarat rises to 3.06 million hectares

Ahmedabad: Farmers in Gujarat — one of the key agricultural states in western India — are showing strong enthusiasm for rabi crop cultivation this year. As a result, the sowing of wheat, coarse cereals, pulses, and oilseeds is progressing well ahead of last year. According to the latest weekly report from the Gujarat Agriculture Department, the total rabi crop acreage has reached 3.06 million hectares. This is 0.522 million hectares higher than the 2.538 million hectares sown during the same period last year and is 66.4% of the normal average acreage of 4.607 million hectares over the past three years.
Compared to last year, wheat acreage has jumped from 0.609 million hectares to 0.859 million hectares, chickpea (chana) sowing has increased from 0.436 million to 0.590 million hectares, and mustard acreage has risen from 0.190 million to 0.231 million hectares. Among coarse cereals, maize sowing has increased from 94,000 hectares to 100,000 hectares. Overall, during the current rabi season in Gujarat, sowing has been completed for 0.859 million hectares of wheat, 0.979 million hectares of total cereals (wheat + coarse cereals), 0.631 million hectares of pulses, and 0.232 million hectares of oilseeds. In contrast, sugarcane area has declined from 0.117 million hectares to 98,000 hectares.
Among spice crops, a mixed trend has been observed. Cumin area has slipped from 262,115 hectares to 260,925 hectares, and the area under isabgol (psyllium) has fallen from 8,662 hectares to 5,122 hectares. On the other hand, coriander acreage has increased sharply from 62,376 hectares to 75,361 hectares, fennel sowing has risen from 25,263 to 25,892 hectares, isabgol (another segment) from 5,670 to 6,613 hectares, and garlic acreage has surged from 6,126 to 9,218 hectares. Sowing for many crops is still underway.
