Sugar Production in Uttar Pradesh Projected at 9 Million Tonnes

Meerut. Sugar production in Uttar Pradesh during the 2026-27 marketing season (October-September) is estimated to be around 9 million tonnes, a figure roughly equal to that of the 2025-26 season. Although the average sugarcane yield in Western Uttar Pradesh is expected to rise by up to 10 percent due to favorable weather and monsoon conditions, there will be no significant increase in total sugar production at the state level. This is due to a slight decline in the sugarcane cultivation area and the fact that crushing is set to begin earlier than usual this time, which could impact the sugar recovery rate.

Sugar mills closely monitor the sugarcane acreage and crop condition within their command areas. According to millers, the sugarcane cultivation area in Uttar Pradesh has decreased by 100,000 to 200,000 hectares this year compared to the last. Preliminary data from the state government also indicates a reduction in sugarcane acreage. Government figures show that the sugarcane area in Uttar Pradesh stood at 2.861 million hectares last year but has dropped to 2.813 million hectares this season.

The industry and trade sectors had anticipated that sugar production in Uttar Pradesh would rise to nearly 10 million tonnes during the 2026-27 season, but this now appears unlikely. Uttar Pradesh is the leading producer of sugarcane and jaggery, and the second-largest producer of sugar in the country. Sugarcane crushing in the state is expected to commence on October 15 this year.
