Thiruvananthapuram. The Meteorological Department had previously forecast that the Southwest Monsoon was likely to arrive on the southern coast of Kerala on May 26th this year; however, it now appears that its arrival may be slightly delayed.
Indications emerging from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea suggest that the monsoon will not reach Kerala tomorrow—May 26th—as it is currently still in the vicinity of Sri Lanka.
Typically, the Southwest Monsoon enters India via the route through Sri Lanka; therefore, it can be assumed that its eventual arrival in India will not be significantly delayed. In any case, the Meteorological Department's forecasts inherently allow for a margin of plus or minus four days.
While the monsoon typically reaches Sri Lanka by May 22nd, its arrival there was delayed this year. From that point, it usually takes the monsoon approximately one week to reach Kerala.
An interesting fact is that the monsoon arrived in Myanmar and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands roughly on schedule; however, its subsequent rate of advancement slowed down somewhat as it encountered opposing winds.
