Vancouver. The sowing of lentil has been completed in Canada. Heavy rains occurred in most parts of Saskatchewan province during the last week and waterlogging occurred in some areas.
The rapid growth of the crop is being hindered due to the cold weather and increased moisture content in the fields.
There is a possibility of an increase in the infestation of diseases and insects on the lentil crop due to heavy rains, which may lead to a decrease in the yield rate.
The weather of the next three-four weeks is going to prove very important for the crop and the condition and direction of prices can be determined on its basis.
The sowing data has been released by StatsCan on 27 June. According to the report, the production area of lentil increased by 15 percent from last year and reached 42 lakh acres this time.
Under this, the sowing area of red lentil increased from 23 lakh acres to 25.60 lakh acres, area of thick green lentil increased from 9 lakh acres to 11.10 lakh acres and area of small green lentil improved from 3.70 acres to 4.70 lakh acres.
Lentil crop appears to be in better condition due to favourable weather in Canada. 90 percent of lentil crop in Saskatchewan has been assessed to be in good or encouraging condition. At the end of May, 96 percent of the crop was in this condition. At present, it is difficult to make any definite estimate about the yield rate and production of lentil.
During the current marketing season, 12.50 lakh tonnes of lentil has been exported from Canada so far, which is much less than the shipment of 17.10 lakh tonnes in the same period of last season and the five-year average export of 15.50 lakh tonnes.
There is limited stock of lentil there, due to which the supply of goods in the markets is decreasing. The marketing season is going to end soon.
Harvesting of the new crop is going to start from next month. The production of lentils can increase by 42 to 25 thousand tonnes.
