Las Begas. Farmers got a lot of encouragement to increase the sowing area of pulse crops as they got attractive income due to high global market prices.
As a result, tremendous increase in sowing area of pulses like lentil, pea and chickpea is being reported in America as well as Canada. In India, American lentil has now got equal level of competition with Canada and Australia whereas earlier high rate of duty was applicable on it.
According to official data, during the current year, compared to last year, lentil production area in America jumped by 58 percent to 8.36 lakh acres, chickpea sowing area increased by 36 percent to 5.02 lakh acres and pea area improved by 9 percent to 10.30 lakh acres.
If the weather and rainfall conditions remain favorable for the crop, then the productivity rate of these pulse crops can remain higher than the normal average level. And there can be a good increase in the total production.
America's Montana and North and South Dakota provinces produce good amount of pulses and due to low domestic consumption, they get an opportunity to export it. Pulses are also cultivated in some other neighbouring provinces. In Canada too, pulses are mainly produced in two states -
Saskatchewan and Alberta, while it is cultivated in limited quantity in some other provinces including Manitoba. From next month, preparation for harvesting of pulses is going to start in both these countries.
